Berlin’s culinary scene is amongst the most diverse in Germany. The cosmopolitan capital, with a multitude of ethnic neighbourhoods offers dishes from across the world, from Asia to the Americas. Meat and sausages are a local favourite and for great steaks and classic burgers, then head to Midtown Grill at the recently remodelled Marriot Berlin.
Midtown location – Potsdamer Platz
Potsdamer Platz the new nexus of the German capital. I was last in Berlin in 1993, a few years after the wall fell. With reunification came the energy of new construction. At that time Potsdamer Platz was a forest of construction cranes promising a new future and new urban centre. Returning almost 30 years later the developers and business have created a commercial hub where you can shop in the striking Sony Centre or have cocktails in the chic Fragrances bar of the stylish new Ritz Carlton Hotel.
It’s an area that buzzing with energy, popular with local business people, shoppers, and visitors to the cool leisure facilities.
Tempting Lunch
After a busy morning enjoying Potsdamer Platz, we took a break for lunch and the Midtown Grill lived up to expectations, with a tempting menu of superb quality steaks, America classic burgers and an impressive wine list, with choices by the glass too.
Stephan, Front of House is welcoming and chatty and once seated we had a lovely server called Sabine who make same good recommendations.
One can’t go wrong with a classic Caesar salad with chargrilled salmon, and a tomato and mozzarella salad – both generous, American sized portions.
Steaks Cooked on Charcoal
Steaks include Rib Eye, T-Bones, Tenderloins, and even 1200 gram Porterhouse steaks. Yet we opted for the classic Filet Mignon, an elegant and tasty choice.
Each cut is prepared to order by the chefs cuts prepared on glowing hot charcoal in the X-Oven.
If you’re looking for something different then there are German specialities like Mini Kartoffel as well as seafood including oysters, soft-shell crab or lobster, and salads too.
I really liked the wine list and order by the glass. The Schneider ‘Black Print’ red wine was excellent.
If you have a sweet tooth, then the Crème Brûleé or New York Cheesecake should satisfy.
The hotel has recently been renovated and boasts city-centre rooms with contemporary design.
